Highlights
Day One
From the presentation of finalists
Friday, 4th November
Okotoks,
Canada – Compost
from Sewage
This community is producing compost from sewage and
exporting to neighbouring areas and is a leader in resource
recovery. The community caught the audiences eye with Drake
Landing – the first seasonal storage facility in North
America which will provide the houses on the new development
with 90% of their energy needs.
Stavanger, Norway –
Sending SMS Messages
Stavanger
has pioneered the concept of sending SMS messages to
residences to let them know when special recycling
collections are going to be made. The community also has a
project to reduce the nearly 100 sewage outlets that ran
into the three beautiful Fjords that surround Stavanger.
These have now been reduced to just 10.
Whistler, Canada – Bear
Proof Waste Recycling
Amongst the many exciting concepts that Whistler put before
the judges was the Bear Proof Waste Recycling Centre which
is now so successful that it exports waste at a profit which
goes to supporting 25 local community projects. The
community includes a 1,300 yr old tree!
Song Jiang,
PR China – Even the Big Mac’s are in paper
Just one of the inspiring concepts from Song Jiang was one
where all plastic food containers are banned – even the Big
Mac’s are in paper bags.
Ptuj,
Slovenia – Houses of Information
Ptuj, Slovenia has Houses of Information. These bring
together members of the community who are either unemployed
or threatened with redundancy so that they can use each
other as a support mechanism and gain further information on
a wide variety of subjects.
Aylsham,
England – Encouraging local families
Aylsham is taking positive action
to ensure
that local families on below average incomes have a chance
to buy houses in the community. As they explained, in a
small market town with high house prices it can be a problem
to maintain a good demographic balance.
Dungannon,
Ireland – Bringing communities together
Mayor, Councillor Francie Molloy of Dungannon and South
Tyrone Borough Council explained that the experiences that
his community has had in bringing different groups together
was one that he was most proud of.
Erandio,
Spain – Dolphins in the River
A project involving the recovery of the river which had
fallen to zero oxygen levels – has been so successful that
the river now has dolphins swimming up to Erandio!
Gateshead,
England – Successful in overcoming an industrial legacy
Gateshead
has inherited many issues as a result of its industrial
past. One example of this is the Watergate project which
had contaminated land and where they have created an
excellent open space which assisted in securing the Garden
Festival which had such an impact on the region. An example
of the bio diversity of the area was the extraordinary fact
that having reintroduced Red Kites into the area, their
nesting boxes are now away from one of the biggest
developments in Europe – The Metro Centre.
Kladno,
Czech Republic – Taking art to the yard
Under the judging criteria for Community Involvement, the
delegation used the example of Kladno Yards where yards in
one of the older quarters are used for exhibitions from
artists and musicians.
Lidkoping, Sweden – Common
Room
The Wishing Document is a major community involvement
project and the delegation is very keen to provide a ‘common
room in the town environment’, a place for the soul where
they can have a good dialogue with the community.
The awards will be presented on the evening of Monday, 7th
November by the US representative of the UN Environment
Programme. For further information please see the website
