This evening (Thursday, 9 November) the delegates took part in the Exchange of Civic Gifts at a reception hosted by the vice-Mayor of Hangzhou, PR China.

In opening the 10th annual Livcom Awards which this year are hosted by his home town. Mr Yang Xu Biao quoted from the great Chinese philosopher Confucius: "It is a delight to see friends from afar."

He said the Livcom delegates’ presence added to "the charm of my city, which has long been regarded as the land of fish and rice, home to silk and tea, a tourist attraction and a city of culture".

Hangzhou and its suburb of one thousand islets has itself won Livcom awards for sustainable living in 2002 and 2004. "In the years to come we will endeavour to build Hangzhou into a harmonious community characterized by the following four golden features that is an economic powerhouse, city of culture, tourist destination and a silicon valley on paradise," said Mr Yang, who participated in the traditional Exchange of Gifts between delegates and the city of Hangzhou.

"I sincerely hope experts and delegates will bring a penetrating insight and profound knowledge to Hangzhou and I hope my city will leave you a deep impression."

The mayor Hangzhou, Sun Zhonghuan, is travelling back from Beijing to attend the Livcom Awards ceremony on Monday, November 13.

Judge Claudette Savaria (CAN) commented: "Livcom is of such importance today because people have to really work together to take care of our environment. It is our future and is of importance for generations to come. LivCom is run by volunteers who all work hard and the movement is becoming greater every year."

Programme for the week

Friday, 10 November and Saturday, 11 November

The presentations will be made by the finalists in Categories A to D

The project finalists will also be presenting on these dates.

All 55 finalists from countries around the globe will be assessed by a panel of international judges.

Sunday, 12 November

The presentations will be made by the finalists in Category E

Monday, 13 November

The conclusion of LivCom will be the awards ceremony and dinner at 22.00 (local time)
