LIVCOM SIGNS AGREEMENT WITH UNITED NATIONS
The International Awards for Liveable
Communities (LivCom) formally signed a Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) with the United Nations tonight (26
November) in London, UK.
The aim of the MOU is to enhance co-operation
and co-ordination between LivCom and the UN Environment
Programme (UNEP). The document was signed by Alan Smith,
Chief Executive of LivCom and Christophe Bouvier, European
Director of UNEP.
The MOU was signed at an awards ceremony at
the Café Royal in London where communities around the globe
were recognised for their achievements in working to tackle
key environmental issues including climate change and global
warming.
Mr Bouvier said: “The LivCom awards
competition and event is an extremely important experience
because it brings together and talks to those who have the
responsibility for taking action in their communities to
improve living conditions and the environment.
“Around 80 per cent of the carbon emissions
and so it is there at local level that action to find
solutions to reduce this can start.”
He added: “The MOU is significant because it
will ensure wider co-operation between UNEP and LivCom.
Within the next year we are looking to establish an
increased focus by UNEP on these issues and a greater level
of work alongside those who are responsible for effecting
change – LivCom can help us achieve that.”
Alan Smith, chief executive of LivCom
welcomed the MOU.
“This marks a significant step for LivCom. We
have been working with the UN for some time but look forward
to increased co-operation to achieve our objective of
highlighting both the environmental issues facing
communities around the work and the ways in which people are
taking steps to tackle them.”
