PRESS RELEASE DATE: 14th May 2008
EMBARGO: Immediate Release
LIVCOM AWARDS TO RECOGNISE INDIVIDUAL WHO HAS MADE A
LASTING IMPACT ON COMMUNITY
THE search is on for the person who has made the most
valuable and lasting contribution to the sustainability and
quality of life in his or her community.
Nominations are being gathered for the 2008 International
Awards for Liveable Communities (LivCom) Individual Award as
part of a raft of awards made under the annual scheme which
has the backing of the United Nations Environment Programme
(UNEP).
As well as the individual award, LivCom Awards are made in
three categories covering Whole City, Sustainable Projects
and a Bursary Award which sees match funding of £10,000 go
to the winning project.
Criteria used in evaluating the achievements of communities
large and small around the globe include the following;
Enhancement of the Landscape: Landscaping, in the context of
the Awards, is the aspect of the City and Townscape, which
creates an environment enhanced through horticultural and
infrastructure designs. It must be demonstrated how
landscaping in a community has brought together all of the
distinct elements, both built and natural, so as to
establish a sympathetic relationship between the built and
natural landscape.
Heritage Management: Heritage, in the context of the
Awards, is defined as the bringing together of historic
property, green and natural heritage, industrial heritage,
language and cultural practices, designed to ensure that the
legacy of the past is protected.
Environmentally Sensitive Practices: This should
demonstrate how the community has adopted innovative
environmentally sensitive practices and pursues initiatives
that result in sustainable management of the environment.
Community Sustainability: This section covers the method
and style of ongoing involvement of individuals, groups and
organisations in the planning, development and management of
the local community, and how the local community is
empowered and react to the opportunity of being involved in
its development.
Healthy Lifestyles: This section should demonstrate the
community’s record of healthy lifestyles, both through the
provision of appropriate facilities, and the promotion of
active participation.
Planning for the Future: This looks at the use of sensitive
and creative planning techniques for the creation of a
sustainable, liveable community.
In assessing the individual award, judges will focus on
two criteria - that the individual has developed the
boundaries of best practice in one or more of the LivCom
Judging Crirteria and that the results of their efforts has
been a real and sustainable improvement in the quality of
life.
Last year’s award was won by Mr Wang Shi. Wang worked in the
railway and real estate industries in Guangdong, and in the
Shenzhen Economic Special Zone. He is known as a prominent
business leader and has served as an official of several
associations dealing with real estate and commerce.
